This article describes the process of how plants grow, using a family of chemicals called auxins to send signals to the plant.  The removal of the shoot that has the first advantage allows all the other branches to compete on somewhat equal terms.  I am sure that this concept has a correllation with emergent behavior and might be a good model for some of the future garden tests.
