EdGCM: Examples of Diagnostic Variables

Sample Diagnostic Variables Available for Use with EdGCM

EdGCM offers the ability to view hundreds of diagnostic variables produced by the Global Climate Model. Below is a list of typical variables that can be used in lab exercises with most students. (Unless otherwise noted, all variables listed are shown in the default variables list.)

Map Variables:  Values are represented in a latitude x longitude grid at the Earth’s surface.

Map variables include:

Surface Air Temperature

Snow Depth

Snow and Ice Coverage

Ocean Ice Coverage

Precipitation

Evaporation

Surface Wind Speed

Low Level Cloud Cover

High Level Cloud Cover

Total Cloud Cover

Planetary Albedo

Net Radiation of Planet

Soil Moisture

Ocean Mixed-Layer Temperature

Max. Surface Temperature

Min. Surface Temperature

Length of Growing Season (requires "all variables" list view)

Times Series: Values are shown as a function of time over the course of the simulation.

Time series variables include:

Surface Air Temperature

Precipitation

Evaporation

Snow Cover

Ocean Ice Cover

Total Cloud Cover

Water Content of the Atmosphere

Planetary Albedo

Net Radiation Absorbed by Planet

Net Heating at Ground Surface

Vertical Slices: Variable values are indicated by color and are shown as a function of atmospheric height (in pressure coordinates) across the range of latitudes.

Vertical Slice variables include:

Temperature

Specific Humidity

Relative Humidity

Zonal Wind Speed

Meridional Wind Speed

Stream Function

Total Cloud Cover

Zonal Averages: Variables are shown as average values along lines of latitude, for the full range of latitudes.

Zonal average variables include:

Surface Air Temperature

Precipitation

Evaporation

Total Cloud Cover

Incoming SW Radiation

Ocean Ice Cover

Snow Depth

Snow Cover

Planetary Albedo
