Summary: Bombarded by stories of doom and gloom, it sometimes seems as if all news about the ocean is bad news.  But there are stories of hope, and we need to hear them for the inspiration and lessons they provide.  In this symposium, part of a continuing series, we will hear about how marine environments have improved thanks to protection and active restoration, with examples that include California and the Chesapeake Bay, as well as about legal actions that make future successes more likely around the world.
